The Last Machine Char Aznable Ever Chose

"I'm not like you — I can't afford to be just a pilot!" When Char Aznable hurled those words at Amuro from his cockpit, he was sitting inside the Sazabi.

The Red Comet. Casval Rem Deikun. Quattro Bajeena — a man who bore countless names, who lived as the orphan of Zeon's founding father, as an ace pilot, as a political leader, racing through the violent currents of an era. In Universal Century 0093, this man chose MSN-04 Sazabi as the vessel for his "final judgment" upon humanity.

Standing 25.6 meters tall. Generator output of 3,960 kW. The technological apex of Zeonic mobile suit engineering and the crystallization of Newtype-use machine design. The Sazabi was far more than simply a "powerful machine." It was the vessel that carried the full weight of Char's life — his father's ideals, his mother's absence, the loss of Lalah, his obsession with Amuro, and his despair and fury toward all of Earth — into his final battle.

This article offers a thorough breakdown of the Sazabi's complete specs, full armament, development background, fateful duel with Nu Gundam, design secrets, and Gunpla information from every possible angle.

Overwhelming Power — Comparison with Contemporary MS

The Sazabi's generator output of 3,960 kW was far and away the highest among mobile suits of U.C. 0093. Here is a direct comparison with other machines of the same era.

Mobile Suit Output Sazabi Ratio
Geara Doga (AMS-119) 1,440kW ~2.75x
Jegan (RGM-89) 1,870kW ~2.12x
Re-GZ (RGZ-91) 2,550kW ~1.55x
Nu Gundam (RX-93) 2,980kW ~1.33x
Sazabi (MSN-04) 3,960kW —

Even compared to the Nu Gundam, the Sazabi boasted roughly 1.33 times the generator output, giving it a clear edge in raw power. Its total thrust of 133,000 kg was equally extraordinary for the period, enabling the 25.6-meter giant to move at speeds that defied its massive frame.

Why Did It Become a 25-Meter Giant?

During early development, the Sazabi was originally conceived as an even larger mobile-armor-class machine. However, the adoption of Psycho-Frame technology — which embedded psycommu receiver chips directly into the structural frame material — eliminated the need for bulky external psycommu equipment. This allowed the design to be scaled down to a 25-meter-class mobile suit.

Even so, at 25.6 meters, it still dwarfed standard mobile suits (typically around 18 meters). This larger size was necessary to accommodate the high-output generator, oversized thrusters, abundant propellant reserves, and the frame volume needed to distribute Psycho-Frame material throughout the entire body.

Full Armament Breakdown — No Blind Spots from Close Range to Long Range

The Sazabi's armament covers every engagement distance, from Newtype-use funnels to heavy ranged weapons and melee arms. As the machine of Neo Zeon's supreme commander, it was designed so that Char could handle one-against-many scenarios with a diverse arsenal of attack options.

Weapons Summary

Weapon Type Output/Caliber Features
Funnels Psycommu weapon — 6 units. Container enables energy resupply
Beam Shot Rifle Ranged weapon 10.2MW Switchable scatter/convergent modes
Abdominal Mega Particle Cannon Built-in weapon 8.8MW Direct generator linkage
Beam Tomahawk Melee weapon — Transforms into multiple configurations
Shield Defensive armament — Houses 3 missiles and 1 large beam saber

Funnels — Six-Unit All-Range Attack

The Sazabi's rear funnel container houses six funnels. These are the same type used by the Jagd Doga, remotely controlled via Newtype psycho-waves to launch simultaneous multi-angle attacks from the enemy's blind spots — the quintessential all-range weapon.

What sets the Sazabi's funnel operation apart is the container's energy resupply function. Unlike disposable systems, the funnels can return to the container for energy and propellant recharging, enabling sustained use over extended engagements. This capability is on full display in the film, where Char wages a prolonged funnel battle against Amuro's Nu Gundam.

That said, Amuro Ray is also a Newtype, and the "funnel versus funnel" aerial combat between the Sazabi and the Nu Gundam's fin funnels became one of the most iconic sequences in Char's Counterattack.

Beam Shot Rifle (ALB-BSR-N4)

A high-performance beam rifle developed by Albert. Despite using an E-pack system, its 10.2 MW output was exceptional for a mobile suit beam rifle of this era.

Its defining feature is the ability to switch between scatter mode and convergent mode. In convergent mode, it delivers pinpoint shots at long range. In scatter mode — firing shotgun-like spread beams — it can suppress multiple targets at close range or catch enemies performing evasive maneuvers. The pilot can switch between modes instantaneously, giving this weapon extreme tactical versatility.

In the film, the rifle's devastating power is showcased during the engagement with the Re-GZ.

Abdominal Mega Particle Cannon (Diffuse Mega Particle Cannon)

A fixed weapon built into the Sazabi's abdominal armor. Rated at 8.8 MW — numerically lower than the Beam Shot Rifle's 10.2 MW — but because it draws directly from the generator, its actual destructive output is considered superior. Unlike E-pack-dependent weapons, it can fire as long as the generator is operational.

The most memorable use of this weapon in the film is the sweeping attack against the Londo Bell fleet's Jegan squadron. Char annihilated multiple shield-bearing Jegans in a single blast, a brutal demonstration of the Sazabi's overwhelming firepower.

Beam Tomahawk / Beam Saber

A specialized beam weapon exclusive to the Sazabi that transforms into multiple configurations depending on the situation.

  • Beam Tomahawk mode: Forms a double-bladed axe-shaped I-field. Effective in close combat with its wide slashing arc
  • Beam Saber mode: Extends a saber blade from the tomahawk's apex, creating an oversized beam saber with exceptional reach
  • Beam Axe mode: A single-bladed axe configuration that balances ease of handling with destructive power

During the final duel with the Nu Gundam, Char alternated between beam saber and beam tomahawk forms in a ferocious melee engagement, showcasing his exceptional close-combat piloting skills.

Shield (Dedicated Large Shield)

A custom shield built from thick Gundarium alloy with multiple layers of anti-beam coating. Far more than a simple defensive tool, it houses the following built-in systems.

  • 3 small missiles: Stored on the shield's inner surface, used for surprise attacks and suppressive fire
  • 1 large beam saber: Mounted on the shield's inner surface, serving as a backup melee weapon separate from the main beam tomahawk

In the film, the shield also plays a role during the scene where nuclear missiles are intercepted using funnels and beam weapons.

The Pilot — The Full Arc of Char Aznable

Casval Rem Deikun / Char Aznable / Quattro Bajeena

Field Detail
Birth Name Casval Rem Deikun
Known As Char Aznable
Aliases Quattro Bajeena, The Red Comet
Origin Side 3 (Republic of Zeon)
Father Zeon Zum Deikun (founder of Zeonism)
Rank (CCA era) Supreme Commander, Neo Zeon

The One Year War — Birth of the Red Comet

Born as the son of Zeon Zum Deikun, Casval fled the Zabi family after his father's assassination and enlisted in the Zeon military under the name "Char Aznable." At the Battle of Loum, he single-handedly sank five Federation warships, earning the legendary epithet "The Red Comet." His mobile suits were the red-painted MS-06S Zaku II, the MS-14S Gelgoog, and the MSN-02 Zeong.

Throughout the One Year War, he lived a double life — publicly fighting as Zeon's ace pilot while secretly carrying out his vendetta against the Zabi family.

The Gryps War — As Quattro Bajeena

After the One Year War, Char joined the AEUG under the alias "Quattro Bajeena." Piloting the Hyaku Shiki (MSN-00100), he fought against the Titans. His famous speech at Dakar before the Earth Federation Assembly, advocating for Spacenoid rights, revealed his emerging political ambitions.

However, after the conclusion of the Gryps War and his confrontation with Haman Karn, Char vanished from the public stage.

The Second Neo Zeon War — Sazabi and the Final Decision

Universal Century 0093. Char returned to the Earth Sphere as the supreme commander of "Neo Zeon." This was no longer about revenge against the Zabi family or championing Spacenoid rights. Char's chosen course was far more extreme: dropping the asteroid Axis onto Earth, triggering a nuclear winter that would force all of humanity into space — an act of absolute "purification."

"Axis, go! Take with you all of these abominable memories!"

That single line encapsulates his despair toward a humanity chained to Earth. And the Sazabi was the machine chosen to carry that decision into battle. Aboard the Sazabi, Char engaged his eternal rival Amuro Ray's Nu Gundam in the final showdown of the Universal Century.

Iconic Lines — Words from the Cockpit

The words Char spoke from the Sazabi's cockpit are among the most quoted in all of Gundam history.

  • "You're pathetic!" — A cutting insult hurled at Amuro. Yet beneath the contempt lies a deep obsession with Amuro and the frustration of never being acknowledged as his equal.
  • "I'm not like you — I can't afford to be just a pilot!" — A line that reveals both the burden of political leadership and the anguish of never being able to fight as a pure warrior.
  • "Lalah Sune was a woman who could have been like a mother to me! And you — you took her away!" — The raw core of the Char-Amuro rivalry. A shocking confession that Char sought maternal comfort in the Newtype girl Lalah, exposing his deepest psychological vulnerability.
  • "I believe I've won. No mobile suit has the power to push back an object drawn by Earth's gravity." — Spoken after his defeat, captured in an escape pod. He lost the battle, but declared victory in his plan — the Axis drop.

Combat in the Film — The Final Duel with Nu Gundam

Opening Act: Overwhelming the Re-GZ

The Sazabi's combat prowess is first demonstrated during its engagement with Amuro's Re-GZ (RGZ-91). The Re-GZ was positioned as a mass-production derivative of the Zeta Gundam, but it was hopelessly outmatched by the Sazabi. Char's coordinated use of the Beam Shot Rifle's scatter fire and funnel attacks pushed Amuro into a losing position, even with his exceptional piloting skills.

This battle convinced Amuro that only the Nu Gundam could stand a chance against Char.

Nuclear Missile Interception

When the Londo Bell fleet launched nuclear missiles to destroy Axis, the Sazabi intercepted every single warhead single-handedly. Using funnels and beam weapons for precision interception, this scene represents the ultimate demonstration of both the Sazabi's combined firepower and Char's piloting mastery pushed to the absolute limit.

The One-on-One Duel with Nu Gundam

The climax of the film — Sazabi versus Nu Gundam — is widely regarded as the defining battle of Universal Century Gundam.

Funnel versus Funnel: The opening phase erupts into an all-range exchange as the Sazabi's funnels and the Nu Gundam's fin funnels swarm through space. Two Newtypes reading each other's movements, shooting down each other's remote weapons, forming overlapping fields of fire — the ultimate expression of "Newtype versus Newtype" combat.

Ranged combat: Beams of light cross as the Beam Shot Rifle clashes with the Nu Gundam's beam rifle, while the abdominal mega particle cannon illuminates the battlefield. The Sazabi's output advantage is clear, but Amuro's evasion skills and split-second judgment offset the raw power gap.

Melee combat: The final phase devolves into close-quarters fighting with beam sabers and beam tomahawks. The lifelong grudge between Char and Amuro is distilled into every clash of blades.

The End — The Sazabi's Last Moments

As the Nu Gundam's Psycho-Frame begins to resonate, the Sazabi is gradually cornered and ultimately destroyed by the Nu Gundam's beam saber. However, Char survives by ejecting in an escape pod. Amuro seizes the pod with the Nu Gundam's manipulator hand — and, still gripping it, charges toward Axis alone to push it back. This leads directly into the legendary scene that defines the end of Char's Counterattack.

The Sazabi's defeat was not a matter of inferior machine performance. The Nu Gundam carried Psycho-Frame technology that Char himself had deliberately leaked, and the resulting resonance phenomenon provided Amuro with an unexpected power boost. In a cruel irony, Char's own actions sowed the seeds of his defeat.

The Psycho-Frame Leak — Char's True Feelings

No analysis of the Sazabi's defeat is complete without addressing the Psycho-Frame technology leak.

Char intentionally fed Psycho-Frame technology to the Nu Gundam's development team. The information flowed from Anaheim Electronics' Granada factory (Neo Zeon's side) to the Von Braun factory (Federation's side), ensuring that the Nu Gundam would also be equipped with Psycho-Frame technology.

The stated reason was the pride of a warrior: "I want to settle this on equal terms." But many fans and critics interpret this as an expression of Char's subconscious — a contradictory wish that "he actually wanted Amuro to stop him" and "he didn't truly want his plan to succeed." The Sazabi's defeat may, in a sense, have been the outcome Char secretly desired all along.

Development History — How the Psycho-Frame Changed Everything

The Development Team and Background

The Sazabi's development was led by Nanai Miguel, director of Neo Zeon's Newtype Research Institute. Nanai was also Char's lover, and the Sazabi's foundational design was conceived under her guidance.

Manufacturing took place at Anaheim Electronics' Granada factory. Granada, once the Principality of Zeon's lunar stronghold, still housed many Zeonic engineers, making it an ideal environment for developing Newtype-use machines. The development team also included Arlette Almage, a Newtype engineer who had worked on Char's previous mobile suits.

From Jagd Doga to Sazabi

Before the Sazabi, the Newtype-use machine "Jagd Doga (MSN-03)" was developed as a Newtype variant based on the Geara Doga. However, the Jagd Doga's movable frame lacked the internal volume to fully house psycommu equipment, and a ground-up redesign was deemed necessary to meet the required specifications.

The Sazabi emerged from that process of trial and refinement. Building on the data gathered from the Jagd Doga program, it was designed from scratch as a machine capable of fully integrating the new "Psycho-Frame" psycommu technology.

What Is Psycho-Frame?

Psycho-Frame is a technology that embeds psycommu receiver chips directly into the structural frame material of a mobile suit. Traditional psycommu systems required large, external equipment, but with Psycho-Frame, the frame itself functions as part of the psycommu system.

This technology provided the Sazabi with the following advantages.

  • Reduced machine size: Full psycommu capability in a 25-meter-class MS without resorting to mobile-armor-scale dimensions
  • Improved response: The pilot's intentions are transmitted through the entire frame, dramatically increasing control responsiveness
  • Enhanced tracking: The machine instantly follows the pilot's intuitive Newtype-level inputs, enabling maneuvers impossible for conventional MS

The Sazabi was the first mobile suit to incorporate Psycho-Frame in its "complete form."

Variants — Two Versions of Char's Ultimate Machine

Sazabi (Film Version: MSN-04)

The Sazabi as it appears in the 1988 film Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack. Standing 25.6 meters tall with 3,960 kW output and six funnels, this is the Newtype-use large MS we all know. It fought a legendary battle against the Nu Gundam and marked one of the defining milestones of the Universal Century.

Nightingale (Novel Version: MSN-04II)

In Yoshiyuki Tomino's novelization Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack — Beltorchika's Children, Char's counterpart to the Sazabi is the Nightingale (MSN-04II).

Field Sazabi (Film) Nightingale (Novel)
Model Number MSN-04 MSN-04II
Overall Height 25.6m ~23.0m (head height)
Overall Length — ~28.0m
Dry Weight 30.5t 36.4t
Full Weight 71.2t 87.0t
Output 3,960kW 5,680kW
Total Thrust 133,000kg 247,200kg
Funnels 6 units 6 large funnels
Character Balanced type Super-heavy, super-large

The Nightingale is a further-enlarged, heavily-armed evolution of the Sazabi concept, boasting staggering specs of 5,680 kW output and 247,200 kg total thrust. Equipped with massive binders (combined thrusters and stabilizing wings) on its back, it reaches an overall length of 28 meters with a distinctive, asymmetric silhouette. In the novel, it is described as overwhelmingly superior to the Nu Gundam in performance.

If the film's Sazabi is "a well-balanced Newtype-use MS," the Nightingale is "the ultimate Char custom that only the novel medium could realize." Freed from the constraints of animation, the novel allowed for far bolder specifications.

The Hi-Nu Gundam Parallel

In the novel, the machine that faces the Nightingale is the Hi-Nu Gundam, the novel's equivalent of the film's Nu Gundam. The film and novel versions exist as "parallel worlds," and the best way to appreciate them is as two different interpretations of the same story.

  • Film version: Sazabi vs. Nu Gundam — a balanced duel
  • Novel version: Nightingale vs. Hi-Nu Gundam — a super-spec showdown closer to super robot territory

MSN-04FF Sazabi (Gundam Base Limited)

In recent years, a variant bearing the designation MSN-04FF has also appeared. Equipped with "Double Horn Funnels," this enhanced version has been realized in plastic and figure form through Gundam Base-exclusive RG kits and ROBOT Spirits releases. It increases the funnel count to further strengthen all-range attack capability.

Design Secrets — Yutaka Izubuchi's "Final Armor for Char"

Designer: Yutaka Izubuchi

The Sazabi's mechanical design was created by Yutaka Izubuchi. Izubuchi served as the lead mechanical designer for Char's Counterattack, designing both the Sazabi and the Nu Gundam.

Notably, Izubuchi was brought onto Char's Counterattack after the originally planned lead designer, Mamoru Nagano, left the project. Despite the last-minute appointment, Izubuchi created the Sazabi — an antagonist MS that would become one of the most iconic in Gundam history.

Designed as a Counterpoint to Nu Gundam

The Sazabi's design was deliberately conceived as the "opposite" of the Nu Gundam.

  • Nu Gundam uses white and blue with angular lines → Sazabi uses red with flowing, curved lines
  • Nu Gundam is a sleek 18-meter-class machine → Sazabi is a massive, imposing 25-meter-class machine
  • Nu Gundam's fin funnels deploy like wings from the back → Sazabi's funnels are stored inside a rear container
  • Nu Gundam has twin eyes → Sazabi has a mono-eye

This contrast is entirely intentional, expressing the dichotomy of "hero and nemesis," "Federation and Zeon," and "Amuro and Char" through machine design.

A Head Modeled After Char's Helmet

According to Izubuchi's interviews, the Sazabi's head was designed with Char Aznable's helmet as its motif. The shape of the horn (blade antenna) and the contours of the face section reflect this design intent, visually reinforcing the impression that "this machine's pilot could only be Char."

Early design concepts reportedly considered incorporating the Hyaku Shiki's face mask, but the final design opted for a more distinctive, original look.

The Commitment to Red — The Ultimate "Char Custom"

Char's mobile suits — from the Zaku II to the Gelgoog, Zeong, and Hyaku Shiki — have always been painted in his personal colors. The Sazabi represents the culmination of this tradition, with its entire body unified in red tones. But it is not a simple, flat red: the color scheme uses multiple tones from deep maroon to vivid crimson, creating a rich, layered color design with real depth.

A 25.6-meter giant bathed in deep red, its mono-eye glowing ominously — that silhouette simultaneously conveys the "authority" and "menace" of Char Aznable. It is, quite literally, the final form of the Red Comet.

Origin of the Name

The name "Sazabi" is said to derive from the British auction house "Sotheby's." The machine was originally named "The Knack," but the name was changed due to trademark issues. Gundam antagonist mobile suits are often named after real-world words and names, and the fact that Sazabi takes its name from a prestigious auction house seems to subtly hint at Char's own "nobility."

Cultural Impact — The Gunpla Legend and the Culture of the Red Comet

The Legendary MG Ver.Ka

Among all Sazabi Gunpla kits, the MG 1/100 Sazabi Ver.Ka, released in 2013, is celebrated as one of the greatest Master Grade kits ever produced. Standing approximately 25 cm tall with overwhelming presence, it features Hajime Katoki's (Ver.Ka) meticulous detailing and a complex red color scheme composed of vermilion, red, and maroon tones. More than a decade after its release, it still sells out with every reissue.

The MG Ver.Ka transcended the realm of model kits to establish the Sazabi as a genuine "cultural icon."

The RG's Technical Revolution

The RG 1/144 Sazabi, released in 2018, stunned the Gunpla community with its extraordinary level of precision in 1/144 scale. Its engineering virtually eliminates visible seam lines, color separation through parts division is near-perfect, and because the Sazabi is a 25.6-meter machine, even in 1/144 scale it approaches the size of an HG 1/100 kit. It was widely acclaimed as the "best Gunpla buy of 2018."

The Cultural Penetration of "Char Custom"

The Sazabi is also the ultimate embodiment of the "Char Custom" concept. The Red Comet's personal color has penetrated far beyond Gundam into mainstream Japanese pop culture.

  • Automotive collaborations: "Char Custom Auris" (Toyota) and similar red special-edition vehicles have actually been sold to the public
  • Consumer goods: Char Custom smartphone cases, Char Custom laptops — an endless parade of products built on the formula "red = three times faster = Char Custom"
  • Video games: The Sazabi appears as a top-tier unit in the Super Robot Wars series, G Generation series, Gundam Versus series, and virtually every Gundam game ever made

Reappraisal of the Film Itself

The ever-growing merchandise and game appearances of the Sazabi are backed by the ongoing reappraisal of Char's Counterattack as a film. While it underperformed at the box office upon its 1988 release, the passage of time has elevated it to "the greatest work of Universal Century Gundam" in the eyes of many fans. The Sazabi has become the symbolic machine of that legacy.

METAL STRUCTURE Kaitai Shoki

The ultimate Sazabi collectible deserves special mention: METAL STRUCTURE Kaitai Shoki MSN-04 Sazabi by Bandai. Standing approximately 430 mm tall, crafted from die-cast metal and ABS with a weighty premium feel, its internal structure is reproduced down to the frame level. Priced above 100,000 yen, this high-end product's very existence proves the Sazabi's cultural clout — the love for this machine is strong enough to sustain a product at this price point.

Sazabi vs. Nu Gundam — The Destined Rival Machines

Any discussion of the Sazabi is incomplete without addressing its relationship with the Nu Gundam. These two machines were designed as a "pair," clashed as a "pair" within the story, and are loved by fans as a "pair."

Design Philosophy Comparison

Field Sazabi (MSN-04) Nu Gundam (RX-93)
Developer Neo Zeon Earth Federation (designed by Amuro)
Design Philosophy Commander's machine. Multi-armed, high-output A pilot's "ideal machine," designed by the pilot himself
Overall Height 25.6m 22.0m
Output 3,960kW 2,980kW
Thrust 133,000kg 97,800kg
Funnels 6 units (container resupply) 6 fin funnels (single-use)
Psycho-Frame Distributed throughout entire body Cockpit area only
Color Red (maroon to vermilion) White, blue, black

On paper, the Sazabi outclasses the Nu Gundam across the board. However, the Nu Gundam had Amuro Ray — widely considered the greatest pilot in the Universal Century — at the controls, and the unexpected Psycho-Frame resonance phenomenon ultimately tipped the scales. The Nu Gundam won the day.

The Difference in Funnels

The Sazabi's funnels are compact and can return to the container for energy resupply — an "endurance" design. The Nu Gundam's fin funnels are large with high per-unit firepower, but once their energy is depleted, they are discarded — a "burst damage" design.

This difference in design philosophy directly mirrors the combat styles of their pilots. Char, as supreme commander, fights to "win through attrition." Amuro, as a pure pilot, fights to "end it quickly with overwhelming force."

The Joy of Displaying Them Together

Displaying the MG Ver.Ka Sazabi alongside the MG Ver.Ka Nu Gundam is considered a "milestone achievement" for many Gunpla builders. Red and white, curves and angles, massive bulk and sleek frame — experiencing this contrast in three dimensions is a luxury that only Gunpla can deliver.

Games and Media Featuring the Sazabi

The Sazabi enjoys immense popularity in video games and appears in virtually every Gundam game title.
