What Is the Zaku?
If you could name only one mobile suit, most fans would say “Gundam.” But the second? The answer is almost certainly Zaku.
When the Zaku debuted in Mobile Suit Gundam in 1979, it changed the history of robot anime forever. Before the Zaku, enemy robots appeared in different designs each week, defeated by the hero and forgotten — disposable monsters. The Zaku was different. Dozens of identical machines deployed, maintained, resupplied, with pilots rotating between them — the first robot ever depicted as a true weapon of war.
The green body, single eye (mono-eye), external power pipes, left shoulder spike armor. This design has persisted for over 45 years across every Gundam series, and in 2025, Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX brought it back in a fresh interpretation.
MS-05 Zaku I (Old Zaku) — Where It All Began
Overview
Before discussing the Zaku II, we must acknowledge its predecessor: the MS-05 Zaku I (commonly called the “Old Zaku”).
The Zaku I was the first mass-produced combat mobile suit in history, developed by Zeonic Company. Approximately 820 units were produced, enabling Zeon’s overwhelming early victories. However, its incomplete cooling system limited operational time.

The F-type was the standard production model after the Antarctic Treaty, with nuclear-grade shielding removed for weight reduction.
Weapons
- Zaku Machine Gun (ZMP-50D / MMP-78) — The Zaku’s signature weapon. 120mm drum-fed machine gun. Ineffective against Gundam’s Luna Titanium armor, but devastating against conventional targets.
- Zaku Bazooka (280mm) — Heavy anti-ship/anti-fortification weapon for targets the machine gun cannot handle.
- Heat Hawk — Close-combat axe with a superheated blade that melts through armor.
- Cracker Grenades — Fragmentation grenades for area suppression.
- Magella Top Cannon — 175mm cannon salvaged from Magella Attack tanks. Field-improvised weapon.
- Sturm Faust — Disposable anti-MS rocket. Cheap and powerful.
Notable Pilots
- Char Aznable — The “Red Comet” in his custom MS-06S (detailed below).
- Denim — Squad leader of the Side 7 reconnaissance mission. Struggled to control Gene’s recklessness.
- Gene — The first Zaku pilot to ever fight the Gundam. Destroyed by the Gundam’s beam saber in the legendary opening scene.
- Gadem — Veteran pilot who challenged the Gundam in a Zaku I. A scene that embodied the old soldier’s pride.
- Dozle Zabi — Commander of Solomon. His final stand — “I won’t let you! I won’t let you do this!” — remains one of the war’s most memorable moments.
Iconic Scenes
- Episode 1 “Gundam Rising”: Gene’s Zaku fights the Gundam inside the colony. The Gundam deliberately targets only the cockpit to avoid collateral damage — the moment robot anime grew up.
- Episode 2 “Destroy Gundam”: Char’s red Zaku appears. Oscar’s line “three times faster than normal” and Captain Paolo’s “the Red Comet, Char” sear into memory.
- Episode 3 “Vote to Attack”: Gadem’s Zaku I vs. Gundam. An old machine, an old soldier, fighting to the last.
- Battle of Loum: Zaku formations devastate the Federation fleet in overwhelming numbers.
MS-06S Char’s Custom Zaku II — The Legend of “Three Times Faster”
Specifications
| Field | Detail |
|---|---|
| Model Number | MS-06S |
| Height | 17.5m |
| Weight | 56.2t (empty) / 74.5t (full) |
| Power Output | 976kW |
| Thruster Thrust | 51,600kg |
| Pilot | Char Aznable |
Differences from Standard Zaku
- Thruster boost: 51,600kg vs F-type’s 43,300kg (~20% increase)
- Extended leg fuel tanks: Longer operational range
- Blade antenna: Standard for commander types, enhancing squad communication
- Red personal color: The signature that earned Char the name “Red Comet”
The Truth Behind “Three Times Faster”
The spec difference is only about 20%. The “three times” legend comes from Char’s extraordinary piloting skill — at the Battle of Loum, he sank five Federation warships solo, moving so fast that Federation soldiers reported his speed as “three times normal.” The legend is about the pilot, not the machine.
Variants Across the UC Timeline

MS-06R High Mobility Zaku II — The Ace’s Machine
The ultimate space combat Zaku from MSV:
- MS-06R-1A: Thruster output 51,600kg. Piloted by the Black Tri-Stars.
- MS-06R-2: Power output 1,340kW, thrust 60,000kg — the strongest Zaku ever. Piloted by Johnny Ridden (“Crimson Lightning”) and Shin Matsunaga (“White Wolf”).
MS-06FZ Zaku II Kai (0080)
The Zaku’s final evolution. Fully modernized cockpit with 360-degree panoramic monitor, enlarged backpack thrusters — 70% total thrust increase over standard models. Piloted by Bernard Wiseman (Bernie) in his heartbreaking final battle against the NT-1 Alex.
Psycho Zaku (Thunderbolt)
The MS-06R equipped with the “Reuse P. Device” — a system that connects the pilot’s prosthetic limbs directly to the mobile suit’s controls. Pilot Daryl Lorenz lost both legs but gained the ability to control the Zaku as an extension of his body. Massive propellant tanks and booster rockets create a silhouette that defies every convention of Zaku design.
The Zaku Lineage — Successors Through UC History
Hi-Zack (RMS-106) — Zeta Gundam
Ironically, the Zaku’s successor was built by the Federation. Anaheim Electronics merged Zeon technology with new materials, creating the Gryps War’s main production MS.
Geara Doga (AMS-119) — Char’s Counterattack
Neo Zeon’s main MS during Char’s Rebellion. Green coloring and general-purpose design philosophy directly inherit the Zaku II tradition.
Geara Zulu (AMS-129) — Gundam UC
The “modern Zaku.” Its design deliberately echoes the original Zaku II more closely than its predecessor, with mono-eye, power pipes, and shoulder spike armor making the lineage unmistakable. The “Sleeves” decoration adds Zeon pride to the visual identity.
The GQuuuuuuX Zaku — A 2025 Reinterpretation
Naming Conventions
In GQuuuuuuX, the naming system shifts:
– MS-06 = “Zaku” (no Roman numeral “II”)
– MS-05 = “0 (Zero) Zaku” (equivalent to Zaku I)
Design Changes
The GQuuuuuuX Zaku modernizes the original while respecting its DNA:
– Slimmer proportions: Limbs taper toward extremities, emphasizing a “battle-hardened soldier” silhouette
– Thruster placement: Main thrusters concentrated at waist and thighs; thigh bulges are propellant tanks
– Armor design: Forearm and shin sections feature shield-like plating, visually communicating armor thickness
– New Zaku Bazooka: Redesigned with detailed surface molding
Char’s Red Zaku in GQuuuuuuX
Char’s red Zaku appears in GQuuuuuuX’s opening act. Char sorties in his personal red Zaku for a V Project reconnaissance mission at Side 7 — where he discovers the Gundam and, in this timeline’s most critical divergence, seizes it for himself.
The red Zaku is thus the origin point of GQuuuuuuX’s entire story. Char leaving his Zaku for the Gundam — something that never happened in the original — is the moment that changed this universe’s history forever.
Design History — The “Business Suit” Robot
1979: Birth
Designer Kunio Okawara created the Zaku based on Yoshiyuki Tomino’s rough sketches. Okawara’s design motif was the business suit — inspired by the conformity of Japan’s salaryman culture, where millions wear the same outfit daily. This became the visual language of the mass-production mobile suit.
The mono-eye design was intentional: an inhuman, mechanical eye that contrasts with Gundam’s twin-eyed “face,” establishing the Zaku as a weapon rather than a character.
Evolution Through Series
- Zeta Gundam (1985): Hi-Zack inherits the Zaku design grammar
- THE ORIGIN (2004-): Yasuhiko Yoshikazu modernizes the Zaku while preserving its essence
- Thunderbolt (2012-): Ohtagaki’s muscular, industrial interpretation
- GQuuuuuuX (2025): Streamlined proportions with concentrated thruster placement — respect for the original with fresh perspective

Cultural Impact — Beyond “Cannon Fodder”
The Mass-Production Revolution
Before the Zaku, enemy robots in anime were disposable one-offs. The Zaku introduced logistics to robot anime: ammunition shortages, part sharing, the difficulty of switching between machine types. War became real.
More Than Cannon Fodder
The Zaku is defeated by the Gundam, yes — but it’s never just “cannon fodder.” Its pilots have names, personalities, and stories. Mechanics repair it. Commanders plan around it. The Zaku is a tool whose threat level depends entirely on who’s using it — and that concept is the foundation of the entire “real robot” genre.
Cultural Penetration
- “Three times faster” has become Japanese slang for anything red and fast
- “Mass-production type” (量産型) entered Japanese vernacular as a descriptor for conformity
- Gunpla sales: Zaku kits have sold tens of millions of units, second only to Gundam itself
- Global recognition: “Zaku” is understood worldwide as the archetypal grunt suit in mecha
