Wings Bearing the Name “Freedom” — The One Machine That Changed the SEED Universe

In February 2003, viewers across Japan held their breath.

The Archangel was under relentless assault from ZAFT forces, on the verge of sinking. Just when all hope seemed lost — wings of white and blue sliced through the darkness of space and descended upon the battlefield, single-handedly rewriting the balance of power.

“This is Kira Yamato. Providing support! Evacuate the ship while you can!”

The mobile suit that appeared with those words was the ZGMF-X10A Freedom Gundam. Unlimited operational time powered by a nuclear engine. “Full Burst Mode,” firing five cannons simultaneously. And above all — a pilot who never aims for the cockpit. The Freedom Gundam embodies the contradiction of overwhelming firepower and a “no-kill” philosophy, making it a truly one-of-a-kind mobile suit in Gundam history.

Since its debut in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED (2002–2003), through the sequel SEED DESTINY, and the theatrical film SEED FREEDOM released after a 20-year wait — the Freedom’s lineage overlaps with the very history of the Cosmic Era itself.

This article provides an exhaustive breakdown of the Freedom Gundam’s specs, armaments, and iconic scenes, the lineage leading to Strike Freedom and Mighty Strike Freedom, and a complete guide to every Gunpla grade available.

The Meaning Behind Model Number “ZGMF-X10A”

The Freedom’s model number encapsulates the machine’s very identity.

  • ZGMF: Zero-Gravity Maneuver Fighter — the standard designation code for ZAFT-manufactured mobile suits
  • X: eXperiment — not a mass-production unit, but a one-of-a-kind prototype doubling as a technology demonstrator
  • 10: Development serial number. The Justice Gundam, developed in the same period, is designated X09A
  • A: Atomic — nuclear-powered. This is Freedom’s most defining characteristic

That single letter “A” signifies an existence that defies the norms of the Cosmic Era. In a world where military use of nuclear energy is forbidden, this superweapon was created by breaking the ultimate taboo. Whether naming it “Freedom” reflects the developers’ idealism or their irony is left for the viewer to decide.

The Nuclear Engine and the Neutron Jammer Canceller

In the Cosmic Era (C.E.), the PLANTs (space nation) deployed “Neutron Jammers” into Earth’s crust, devices that inhibit nuclear fission reactions. Every nuclear power plant on Earth shut down, and the resulting energy crisis killed billions — the “April Fool Crisis” stands as the single greatest catastrophe in the SEED universe.

The Neutron Jammer Canceller (NJC) installed in the Freedom Gundam does exactly what its name suggests: it neutralizes the Neutron Jammer’s effects. This enables the nuclear engine to function, completely liberating the Freedom from the greatest weakness of battery-powered mobile suits — running out of energy.

The benefits of this nuclear engine are immense:

  • Unlimited Phase Shift Armor operation: Battery-powered MS consume energy to maintain PS Armor; when power runs out, the armor turns gray (Phase Shift Down), leaving the unit defenseless. The Freedom has no such concern
  • Continuous beam weapon usage: Battery-powered MS deplete their reserves with every beam shot fired. The Freedom can fire literally without limit
  • Extended combat duration: Apart from propellant and ammunition resupply, the Freedom can theoretically continue combat indefinitely

If battery-powered MS are “smartphones,” the Freedom is “a smartphone with a built-in power plant.” This overwhelming advantage is the source of its ability to turn the tide of battle single-handedly.

Armament — The Full Picture of the 5-Cannon Simultaneous “Full Burst”

Weapons List

MA-M20 Lupus Beam Rifle Beam ranged weapon Handheld Primary armament. High-output beam rifle
MMI-GAU2 Picus 76mm CIWS ×2 Ballistic weapon Head Close-In Weapon System. Anti-missile defense
MA-M01 Lacerta Beam Saber ×2 Beam melee weapon Waist side armor Can be combined into the “Ambidextrous Halberd”
M100 Balaena Plasma Beam Cannon ×2 Plasma beam cannon Wings (folding) Freedom’s main guns. Wings deploy to aim forward
MMI-M15 Xiphias Rail Cannon ×2 Electromagnetic accelerator (railgun) Waist Large-caliber solid-shell cannon. Deploys forward for firing
Laminated Anti-Beam Shield Defensive equipment Left arm Disperses and neutralizes beam attacks

Detailed Breakdown of Each Weapon

MA-M20 Lupus Beam Rifle

The Freedom’s handheld primary weapon. “Lupus” means “wolf” in Latin. Thanks to the unlimited energy supply from the nuclear engine, it can fire at a rate incomparable to beam rifles on battery-powered MS. Kira uses this rifle to precisely target enemy weapons and limbs — everything except the cockpit.

MA-M01 Lacerta Beam Saber

Two close-combat beam weapons mounted on the waist side armor. “Lacerta” means “lizard” in Latin. Normally wielded one in each hand for dual-wielding combat, but the two hilts can be connected to form a polearm called the “Ambidextrous Halberd.” This combined mode was used in the battle against the Aegis and the fight with the Destiny Gundam in DESTINY, showcasing Kira’s exceptional melee combat skills.

M100 Balaena Plasma Beam Cannon

The Freedom’s maximum firepower. Two large beam cannons folded inside the rear wings; “Balaena” means “whale” in Latin. The wings deploy to point the muzzles forward for firing. Their destructive power is warship-class — a single shot can vaporize an ordinary MS.

Thanks to the nuclear engine, the Freedom can fire these massive cannons repeatedly without worrying about battery depletion. That is what makes it truly terrifying.

MMI-M15 Xiphias Rail Cannon

Electromagnetic accelerator cannons (railguns) mounted on both sides of the waist. “Xiphias” means “swordfish” in Latin. Unlike beam weapons, these fire solid projectiles at hyper-velocity using electromagnetic force, giving them different physical properties — making them effective even against enemies with anti-beam coating. The distinctive motion of the cannons extending forward from the waist during deployment is one of Freedom’s memorable visual signatures.

MMI-GAU2 Picus 76mm CIWS

Two vulcan cannons built into the head. “Picus” means “woodpecker” in Latin. Their primary role is intercepting missiles and small mobile weapons rather than engaging enemy MS directly. The 76mm caliber is on the larger side for a CIWS, giving it sufficient firepower against lightly armored targets.

HiMAT (High Mobility Aerial Tactics) Mode

HiMAT = High Mobility Aerial Tactics.

A flight configuration with all ten rear wings fully deployed. In-atmosphere maneuverability increases dramatically, allowing the Freedom to attack ground-based enemy MS from above with overwhelming advantage. The silhouette of the Freedom in this deployed state — like the wings of an angel — has become the mobile suit’s most iconic visual.

Full Burst Mode

The Freedom’s maximum firepower mode, deploying and firing all gun ports simultaneously — Balaena ×2, Xiphias ×2, and the Lupus Beam Rifle. The spectacle of five beams and shells fired in unison is nothing short of devastating.

HiMAT Full Burst — SEED’s Ultimate Strike

HiMAT Mode and Full Burst Mode activated simultaneously — the Freedom’s ultimate attack. With wings fully deployed for maximum maneuverability, all five cannons fire at once. Combined with the multi-lock-on system that acquires multiple targets simultaneously, a single volley can dominate the entire battlefield.

The true terror of HiMAT Full Burst lies not in sheer firepower alone. It is an attack that can only exist through the combination of Kira Yamato’s superhuman spatial awareness as a Super Coordinator and the Freedom’s nuclear engine providing unlimited energy. Targeting multiple enemy units and shooting out their weapons and propulsion systems while deliberately avoiding every cockpit — the no-kill HiMAT Full Burst is a feat only Kira and the Freedom can achieve.

This technique became the Freedom’s signature move across both SEED and SEED DESTINY, and was inherited by its successor, the Strike Freedom. Looking across the entire Gundam franchise, it stands alongside Wing Gundam Zero’s “Twin Buster Rifle” and the Nu Gundam’s “Fin Funnel Barrage” as one of the most iconic full-salvo finishers in the series.

Pilot — Kira Yamato, the Warrior Who Refuses to Kill

Profile

Item Details

What Is a Super Coordinator?

In the Cosmic Era, humans whose abilities have been enhanced through genetic modification are called “Coordinators.” The conflict between Coordinators and Naturals (non-modified humans) is the fundamental source of war in the SEED universe.

Kira Yamato is a unique existence even among them — a Super Coordinator. Created using an artificial womb to push the precision of genetic modification to its absolute limit, he is the “ultimate Coordinator,” surpassing ordinary humans in every aspect: physical ability, intelligence, and reflexes.

This ability is the key to unlocking 100% of the Freedom’s potential. The simultaneous targeting of the multi-lock-on system that no normal pilot could process, precision shooting during ultra-high-speed maneuvers, and the “no-kill” fighting style of shooting out everything except the cockpit — all of it is possible only because the pilot is Kira.

The “No-Kill” Oath — How the Freedom Fights

The defining feature of the Freedom Gundam is not its specs or its weapons — it is how its pilot fights.

From the moment Kira switches to the Freedom, he adheres to a combat style that avoids taking enemy pilots’ lives whenever possible. Specifically, he targets enemy MS weapons, propulsion systems, and limbs with pinpoint precision — never the cockpit. Neutralizing dozens of enemies in a single HiMAT Full Burst without killing a single one — this contradictory way of fighting is the very identity of the Freedom Gundam.

However, director Mitsuo Fukuda has stated that “Kira has never once said ‘I won’t kill.'” The words “no-kill” are never explicitly used in the series — it is something viewers infer from Kira’s actions. In fact, during the SEED DESTINY storyline, Kira shoots down the Destroy Gundam piloted by Stella Loussier, killing her — proof that in unavoidable situations, he does deliver lethal strikes.

It is not a perfect no-kill philosophy. But in situations where he can avoid killing, he always chooses that path. That very imperfection is what makes Kira Yamato human, and what gives the Freedom Gundam its narrative depth.

Before the Freedom — The Anguish of the Strike Era

Before piloting the Freedom, Kira was the pilot of the GAT-X105 Strike Gundam. A Coordinator fighting aboard the Earth Alliance warship Archangel, forced to keep battling day after day to protect his comrades.

“I… I… I never wanted to kill anyone!”

This scream, wrung from Kira after destroying Andrew Waltfeld’s LaGOWE in the desert. Having killed friends, having killed enemies, yet having no choice but to keep fighting — this single line encapsulates the despair of a boy pushed to his limit.

During the Strike era, Kira stood on the battlefield for the passive reason of “I must fight or I won’t survive.” But after his near-fatal duel with his best friend Athrun Zala’s Aegis Gundam, he was rescued by Lacus Clyne and given time to ask himself “What am I fighting for?” — and when he returned with the Freedom, Kira had transformed into an active warrior who “fights to stop the war.”

Freedom Gundam’s Combat Record — Tracing the Iconic Scenes

In Mobile Suit Gundam SEED

Episode 34, “In the Eye of the Storm” — Freedom Activates

After being left near death in his duel against Athrun in the Strike Gundam, Kira is rescued by Lacus Clyne. Once recovered, Lacus presents him with the Freedom Gundam — a machine secretly developed by ZAFT. To stop the rampage of her father Patrick Zala, Lacus and her Clyne Faction allies stole the Freedom and entrusted it to Kira.

Lacus’s words at that moment — “Go wherever you wish to go” — signify that the Freedom is not merely a weapon but a symbol of “the will to be free.”

Episode 35, “The Descending Sword” — A Legendary First Sortie

The Freedom Gundam’s first battle — and one of SEED’s most celebrated scenes.

The Archangel is under ferocious attack by ZAFT forces at Alaska Base. In this desperate situation, a single beam of light descends from beyond the atmosphere. The Freedom Gundam, wings spread wide in HiMAT mode, plunges earthward. With Kira’s cry of “Providing support!”, it neutralizes ZAFT mobile suits one after another with overwhelming firepower. And yet, every downed enemy’s cockpit is left intact —.

The impact of this scene was immense. “The Descending Sword” remains one of the most talked-about episodes across all 50 episodes of SEED. Set to the sweeping melody of the insert song “Meteor,” the visual spectacle of the Freedom soaring across the battlefield became a defining moment of 2000s mecha anime.

The Battle of Orb — For the Homeland

Against the Earth Alliance’s invasion of Orb, Kira sorties in the Freedom. Fighting alongside the Three Ships Alliance to defend Cagalli’s homeland, the Freedom engages all three Alliance Gundams simultaneously — Calamity, Raider, and Forbidden — demonstrating the stamina advantage afforded by its nuclear engine.

The Battle of Jachin Due — SEED’s Final Curtain

The climactic battle at the space fortress Jachin Due in the final arc of SEED. The Freedom, alongside the Justice Gundam (piloted by Athrun), moves to destroy GENESIS, a weapon of mass destruction. The final showdown against the Providence Gundam (piloted by Rau Le Creuset) is SEED’s ultimate climax. Kira overcomes the Providence’s omnidirectional DRAGOON attacks through his SEED awakening and destroys it. The Freedom itself sustains heavy damage but succeeds in destroying the nuclear missiles.

In Mobile Suit Gundam SEED DESTINY

Return — The Battle off Orb’s Coast

In the world of SEED DESTINY (C.E. 73), Kira continues to pilot the Freedom. Repaired and ready, the Freedom once again descends upon the battlefield. However, in DESTINY’s narrative, the Freedom is sometimes portrayed not as a “champion of justice” but as “an uninvited third party intervening at will,” becoming a target of rage and hatred for protagonist Shinn Asuka.

Destroying the Destroy Gundam — The Limits of No-Kill

SEED DESTINY Episode 32. As the Earth Alliance’s massive mobile armor “Destroy Gundam” rampages through Berlin, Kira sorties in the Freedom. Despite knowing that the Destroy’s pilot is the Enhanced Human Stella Loussier, he has no choice but to shoot it down to protect civilians. Stella loses her life.

This incident ignites Shinn Asuka’s desire for revenge. Having lost Stella, Shinn challenges the Freedom with his Impulse Gundam —.

Freedom Falls — The Battle Against the Impulse

SEED DESTINY Episode 34, “Nightmare” — the Freedom Gundam’s final hour.

Shinn Asuka’s Impulse Gundam challenges the Freedom to single combat. For the first time, the previously invincible Freedom is pushed into a corner. Shinn’s fury and determination, amplified by his own SEED awakening pushing him beyond his limits, overwhelm the Freedom — and finally, the Impulse’s Excalibur (anti-ship sword) pierces the Freedom’s cockpit —.

The Freedom explodes. Kira miraculously survives, but the ZGMF-X10A Freedom Gundam is lost.

This destruction scene — a protagonist’s machine destroyed by “a different protagonist who isn’t the protagonist” — is an exceptionally rare event in the Gundam franchise. It was a shocking episode that forced viewers to confront the fact that SEED DESTINY’s story is not a simple equation of “Kira = justice.” The subtitle “Nightmare” refers both to Kira’s nightmare and to the audience’s nightmare of “the Freedom losing.”

The Freedom Lineage — Complete Variant Guide

The Freedom Gundam’s design philosophy has been passed down faithfully to its successors. Here, we cover every machine in the Freedom bloodline in chronological order.

ZGMF-X20A Strike Freedom Gundam — The Golden Wings

Item Details
Model Number ZGMF-X20A
Overall Height 18.88m
Weight 80.09t
Armor Material Variable Phase Shift (VPS) Armor
Power Source Hyper Deuterion Engine
Special Equipment Super DRAGOON Mobile Weapon Wings ×8, Voiture Lumiere
Appearance SEED DESTINY / SEED FREEDOM

The successor built for Kira after the loss of the Freedom, developed under Lacus Clyne’s leadership. The name “Strike Freedom” signifies the fusion of two machines Kira previously piloted — the Strike Gundam and the Freedom Gundam.

Building on the Freedom’s design philosophy while incorporating ZAFT’s latest technologies without reservation: Variable Phase Shift Armor, Voiture Lumiere (Wings of Light), and the second-generation DRAGOON system — surpassing the Freedom in every performance metric.

The most significant new weapon is the Super DRAGOON. Eight remote attack units built into the rear wings enable a “13-cannon HiMAT Full Burst” that far exceeds the Freedom’s five-cannon version. Two beam rifles, two Balaena cannons, two Xiphias cannons, and all eight DRAGOONs fire simultaneously — a spectacle that delivers SEED DESTINY’s greatest catharsis.

Characterized by its golden inner frame, the Strike Freedom’s Voiture Lumiere deploys golden wings during SEED awakening. This stunning visual has made it one of the most popular Gunpla kits of all time.

STTS-909 Rising Freedom Gundam — The Next-Generation Freedom

Item Details
Model Number STTS-909
Overall Height 17.80m
Weight 67.90t
Armor Material Variable Phase Shift Armor
Developer Orb Union
Appearance SEED FREEDOM

The new machine Kira pilots at the start of the theatrical film Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM. Developed independently by Orb, it fuses the Strike Freedom’s operational data with technology from the transformable MS “Murasame.”

As its “STTS” designation (rather than “ZGMF”) indicates, this is an Orb-manufactured machine, not a ZAFT product. It is the first Freedom-lineage mobile suit to feature a transformation mechanism (MA mode), enabling high-speed cruising through variable configuration.

During the early part of the film, it sustains significant damage in combat against the Foundation Kingdom’s Black Knight Squad, leading Kira to switch to the Strike Freedom Type II.

ZGMF-X20A Strike Freedom Gundam Type II — The Phoenix Reborn

A refurbished variant of the Strike Freedom that reappears in the theatrical film. Six months before the film’s events, the original Strike Freedom was stolen by terrorists and shot down by the Black Knight Squad’s Rudra. It was then rebuilt as the Type II in Orb’s underground factory.

While the core design remains the same as four years prior, various sections have been updated. Rail cannons “MMI-M16XE5 Folans Asta” have been added to the side armor, and rifle mount racks have been installed, improving both firepower and weapon handling.

Even as a standalone unit, the Type II boasts top-class performance for its era — but its true potential is unleashed in the next configuration.

Mighty Strike Freedom Gundam — SEED FREEDOM’s Ultimate Strike

Item Details
Base Unit Strike Freedom Gundam Type II (ZGMF-X20A)
Additional Equipment Proud Defender
Special Armament EQM-Y148 Converging Heavy Nucleon Beam Cannon “Disruptor”
Appearance SEED FREEDOM

The final battle configuration achieved by docking the additional wing unit “Proud Defender” with the Strike Freedom Type II. Output is dramatically increased, and the Converging Heavy Nucleon Beam Cannon “Disruptor” becomes available.

In the film’s climax, the single shot that Mighty Strike Freedom fires against the Foundation Kingdom’s ultimate weapon is the culmination of 20 years of the SEED saga. It is the moment that left audiences breathless in theaters — truly the ultimate form of the “Wings of Freedom.”

The Consistent Design Philosophy of the Freedom Lineage

All five machines share the following design principles:

  • Unlimited operation through nuclear power (or an equivalent high-output engine)
  • Simultaneous omnidirectional fire from multiple gun ports (Full Burst-type attacks)
  • Visual and functional transformation through wing deployment
  • Exclusive to Kira Yamato — no record of any other pilot operating these machines

From the original Freedom to the final Mighty Strike Freedom, every machine in the lineage remains “a mobile suit that reflects Kira’s will.” This is the defining characteristic of the Freedom line.

Design Lineage — The Visual Revolution of “Freedom” and “Wings”

Designed by Kunio Okawara

The mechanical design of the Freedom Gundam was created by the legendary Kunio Okawara, who has been designing Gundam mobile suits for over 40 years.

Okawara previously worked as a men’s suit designer at the apparel company Onward Kashiyama. This background instilled in him a philosophy of “creating distinction through silhouette” — and the Freedom Gundam’s wings are the crystallization of that very philosophy.

The rear wings, which Okawara himself described as designed to “deploy dramatically in the simplest possible way,” fold compactly when retracted and spread out in a fan shape with ten wing surfaces when deployed. To verify this mechanism, Okawara created paper prototype models to physically test the folding and deployment system.

The Lineage of “Winged Gundams”

The Gundam franchise has a tradition of “Gundams with wings.”

Mobile Suit Wing Characteristics Appearance (Year)
Wing Gundam Transformation wings for Bird Mode Gundam Wing (1995)
Wing Gundam Zero (EW ver.) Angel wings Endless Waltz (1997)
Freedom Gundam 10-surface deployable wings (HiMAT) Gundam SEED (2002)
Destiny Gundam Wings of Light (Voiture Lumiere) Gundam SEED DESTINY (2004)
00 Raiser GN Drive light wings Gundam 00 (2008)

Among these, the Freedom’s wings were groundbreaking in combining the mechanical appeal of “deployment and retraction” with the functional purpose of “full firepower deployment.” Concealing beam cannons within the wings so that deploying them simultaneously initiates a firing stance — this design where beauty and lethality coexist is the hallmark of Kunio Okawara at his finest.

The “White and Blue” Color Scheme

The Freedom Gundam’s predominantly white and blue color scheme evokes “freedom,” “sky,” and “hope.” Given the Phase Shift Armor’s setting of only displaying color when power is supplied, this clean palette also serves as a visual indicator that the unit is “fully energized.”

In the successor Strike Freedom, “gold” joins the palette. The three-color combination of white, blue, and gold maximizes the “heroic presence” of Kira Yamato, and has become the visual identity of the SEED series itself.

Cultural Impact — Symbol of the SEED Generation

The “Face” of 2000s Gundam

The Freedom Gundam is, for the “SEED generation” who became Gundam fans in the 2000s, synonymous with Gundam itself.

Just as the original RX-78-2 Gundam of 1979 is the icon of the “First Gundam generation,” and the Zeta Gundam of 1985 was the gateway for the “real-time OVA generation,” the Freedom Gundam of 2002 defined a generation as the first Gundam icon of the 21st century.

Contribution to Gunpla Sales

Freedom Gundam-related Gunpla have been a flagship product of Bandai’s Gunpla division since SEED’s original broadcast and continue to be to this day. The MG Freedom Gundam Ver.2.0 in particular has sold out with every reprint even more than a decade after its release. New HGCE kits released to coincide with the SEED FREEDOM film were also massive hits, significantly boosting overall Gunpla sales.

In the Bandai Namco Group’s FY2024 financial results (fiscal year ending March 2024), Gundam SEED-related products ranked among the top performers in the IP category, and the Freedom lineage’s contribution is immeasurable.

The Historic Box Office Success of SEED FREEDOM

The theatrical film Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM, released on January 26, 2024, recorded over 5 billion yen in box office revenue and over 3 million admissions, vastly surpassing the all-time box office record for Gundam theatrical releases.

  • Opening 3 days: 1.06 billion yen (No.1 opening of 2024)
  • 2 weeks: 2.68 billion yen (surpassed all-time Gundam record)
  • Final total: exceeded 5 billion yen

Beyond the buzz of a new installment after 20 years, the storyline of Kira Yamato and the Freedom-lineage mobile suits “returning after 20 years” struck a chord with the former SEED generation (viewers who were teenagers then, now in their 30s). In September 2024, a special edition with over 500 updated cuts was screened for a limited run — a hit of a scale that can only be described as a cultural phenomenon.

Influence on Fan Culture

  • “Freedom Descends” / “The Descending Sword”: The scene of the Freedom arriving on the battlefield has become the quintessential “divine intervention” moment among Gundam fans. Any scene where reinforcements arrive in the nick of time is colloquially called “doing a Freedom”
  • “HiMAT Full Burst”: The iconic full-salvo finisher. A staple showcase attack in the Super Robot Wars video game series
  • The No-Kill Debate: Kira’s “no-kill” fighting style has been a subject of fan debate for over 20 years. “Is a no-kill approach truly possible?” “Can you really avoid casualties by not targeting the cockpit?” — these discussions have become a gateway to deeper exploration of Gundam SEED’s themes of “war and justice”
  • “Seed Factor” (Tane-ware): The visual effect of a seed bursting in Kira’s eyes during SEED awakening. Symbolizing the double meaning of “SEED” (the genetic seed = Coordinator / the seed of possibility = awakening), the fan term “Tane-ware” (literally “seed-cracking”) has become part of the fandom lexicon

Tips for Choosing a Freedom Gunpla

When selecting a Freedom Gundam kit, the most important factor is the wing deployment mechanism. Whether or not you can recreate the HiMAT Full Burst pose is what makes or breaks the appeal of a Freedom Gunpla.

  • HGCE can handle it: Wing deployment and Full Burst posing are reproducible. However, the smaller scale means less visual impact compared to MG
  • RG is precise but delicate: The wing deployment mechanism is meticulously engineered, but the small parts require careful handling
  • MG Ver.2.0 is the best balance: The ideal combination of size, gimmicks, and durability. “When in doubt, choose this one”
  • MGEX is an experiential kit: The glowing gold frame is incredibly photogenic. Note, however, that it is a Strike Freedom kit, not the original Freedom
