Introduction — When a Gundam Was “Family”
“If you run, you gain one. If you move forward, you gain two.” — With those words in her heart, a girl gripped the controls of her mobile suit.
In 2022, the Gundam franchise underwent a revolution. Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury was a bold new entry that featured the series’ first-ever female protagonist, set in a school governed by a dueling system, and wove together corporate politics with a conspiracy surrounding a forbidden technology known as “GUND-ARM (Gundam).” The show trended on social media nearly every week, drawing in not only longtime Gundam fans but also a massive wave of first-time viewers. Bandai Namco’s fiscal year 2023 (ending March 2023) earnings reported record-high Gundam-related sales, and The Witch from Mercury was widely credited as the driving force behind those numbers.
At the heart of the story stands a mobile suit called Gundam Aerial (XVX-016).
Aerial is not simply “the strong robot the protagonist pilots.” This machine has a will of its own. For its pilot, Suletta Mercury, Aerial was a “partner” and “family.” And when the truth behind that bond was finally revealed, audiences were left stunned.
This article provides an exhaustive, spoiler-filled breakdown of Aerial — its full specifications, every weapon, how the GUND Format works, its role in the story, and the shocking secret of what it truly is.
What Is the GUND Format? — Essential Background for Understanding Aerial
Before we can discuss Aerial’s capabilities, we need to understand the GUND Format, the core technology at the center of the story.
The Origins of GUND Technology
GUND was originally a body augmentation technology developed to help humans adapt to life in space. It was researched as a medical technology that would merge machine and human body for people who had suffered physical disabilities from long-term space habitation. At the forefront of this research was Dr. Cardo Nabo of the Vanadis Institute.
However, when this technology was applied to mobile suit control systems, GUND-ARM (Gundam) was born. By directly linking a pilot’s body to a mobile suit at the neural level, it achieved piloting precision and reaction speeds far beyond anything conventional MS could offer.
The Problem — Data Storms
The most serious issue with the GUND Format is a phenomenon called Data Storms. When enormous volumes of data flow between pilot and MS, the human body suffers severe strain. In extreme cases, the pilot’s tissues can necrotize, and there were multiple fatalities in the past.
Because of this danger, the Mobile Suit Development Council issued a blanket ban on GUND-ARM development. The very name “Gundam” became taboo.
The Permet Score — Power at a Price
The operating intensity of the GUND Format is quantified by a metric called the Permet Score. As the score rises, machine performance improves dramatically — but the physical toll on the pilot increases in proportion.
| Permet Score | Status | Shell Unit Glow Color |
|---|---|---|
| Score 1–2 | Normal operation. Within safe limits | Red (faint) |
| Score 3 | Gun Bit (remote weapon) use becomes possible. Physical strain begins | Red |
| Score 4 | Advanced remote control. Data Storm danger zone | Red (intense) |
| Score 5 | Wide-area Gun Bit control. Risk of tissue necrosis | Red → Blue transition |
| Score 6 | Ultra-dense information entity formation. Hijacking enemy weapons becomes possible | Blue |
What makes Aerial extraordinary is that Suletta suffers no physical damage from Data Storms even at elevated Permet Scores. This appeared to completely overcome the problems that had plagued all previous GUND-ARM development, shocking everyone around her. The reason is deeply tied to Aerial’s “true nature,” which is revealed in the latter half of the story.

Specs Breakdown
At 43.9 tons, Aerial’s weight falls well within the standard range for MS of its era. But raw numbers alone don’t tell the story of what makes Aerial special. Through the GUND Format’s union of pilot and machine, it achieves combat performance that far exceeds what the catalog specs would suggest.
The Permet Paint Armor (PPA) deserves particular attention. By coating the armor with a mineral called Permet, it provides a degree of protection against beam weapons. This same technology is applied to the Bit Staves (discussed below), and it is what allows detached bits to function as shields.
The Shell Units distributed across the body are control terminals that transmit and process enormous volumes of information between pilot and machine. When the GUND Format reaches a certain operating level, they emit light in patterns resembling electronic circuits. Under normal conditions they glow red, and when Permet Score 6 is reached, they shine brilliant blue — a visual transformation that produced some of the most iconic scenes in the entire show.
Armaments — The Escutcheon and the Bit Stave Revolution
Weapons List
| Weapon | Type | Features |
|---|---|---|
| Beam Rifle | Ranged weapon | Mounted on rear rack. Standard portable firearm |
| Beam Sabers ×2 | Close-combat weapon | Stored in retractable holders beneath the main boosters |
| Head Vulcans ×2 | Ranged weapon (suppressive) | Two rapid-fire low-output beam guns mounted on the forehead |
| Escutcheon | Multi-purpose offense/defense platform | Shield and remote weapon system composed of 11 Bit Staves |
| Bit Staves (Gun Bits) ×11 | Remote weapons | Each unit houses its own thruster and beam cannon |
Beam Rifle
Aerial’s beam rifle is deployed via a rail system that moves the weapon from the back to beneath the arm. This rail mechanism was a point JNTHED was particularly insistent on from the design phase, and together with the concept of “the upper body rotating 360 degrees around the waist like a tank turret,” it gives Aerial its distinctive combat style.
While the output is comparable to a standard MS beam rifle, the GUND Format’s integration of pilot and machine dramatically improves targeting accuracy and firing timing.
Beam Sabers
Two beam sabers are stored in retractable holders on the underside of the main boosters. Aerial demonstrates formidable close-quarters combat ability, and saber duels were frequently showcased during the school’s formal dueling matches.
Head Vulcans
Two low-output rapid-fire beam guns mounted on the forehead. Used for suppressive fire and engaging lightly armored targets.
The Escutcheon — The Most Innovative Shield in Gundam History
Aerial’s defining feature is the Escutcheon, a multi-purpose offense/defense platform mounted on its left arm.
At first glance, the Escutcheon appears to be a large shield. In reality, it is a combination weapon made up of 11 Bit Staves. Controlled through the pilot’s thoughts via the GUND Format, it can shift from shield form to individual bits that deploy across the entire battlefield — this is the next-generation remote weapon system known as Gun Bits (GUND Bits).
Bit Stave Operational Patterns
The Bit Staves can be used in a variety of configurations.
Shield Mode (Combined State)
All 11 Bit Staves unite as the Escutcheon, forming a large shield. With its PPA (Permet Paint Armor) anti-beam defenses, it serves as a robust barrier that can withstand normal MS attacks.
Gun Bit Mode (Separated State)
Each Bit Stave flies independently using its own thruster and fires with its built-in beam cannon. Because Suletta controls them through the GUND Format using her thoughts, they operate as extensions of her own body — unlike conventional funnels or DRAGOONs. With 11 units simultaneously attacking from different directions, a single machine can deliver firepower equivalent to an entire squad.
Bit-On Form
In this configuration, detached Bit Staves are mounted directly onto various parts of Aerial’s body. Through the transformation process of shield → separation → body attachment, Aerial’s propulsion and defensive capabilities are dramatically enhanced. Bits attached to the arms and legs serve as additional thrusters, granting mobility that surpasses the standard configuration.
This three-stage transformation concept — “the shield breaks apart into remote weapons, then attaches to the body for a power-up” — is exceptionally creative even within the Gundam franchise, and it defines Aerial’s identity as a machine.
Pilot — Suletta Mercury
Profile
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| Name | Suletta Mercury |
| Age | 17 (at the start of Season 1) |
| Origin | Mercury |
| Affiliation | Asticassia School of Technology, Earth House → Gund-Arm Inc. |
| Voice Actress | Kana Ichinose |
| Mother | Prospera Mercury (Elnora Samaya) |
Character
Suletta is a girl raised in the development zones of Mercury who is extremely poor at socializing. She tends to stutter and struggles to get her words out when nervous. But the moment she grips the controls of a mobile suit, she transforms into a completely different person. Her unity with Aerial is unmatched by any other pilot, and she is the only person in the series who can push the GUND Format to high Permet Scores without suffering any Data Storm damage.
The way she relates to Aerial goes beyond a pilot-and-machine relationship. “Aerial is family” — Suletta states this without hesitation, talking to Aerial, encouraging it, and fighting alongside it. Audiences would eventually learn that this bond is not mere sentiment but literal truth.
Iconic Quote
“If you run, you gain one. If you move forward, you gain two.”
— Suletta Mercury (Episode 1 and many others)
This phrase, taught to her by her mother Prospera when Suletta was young, is the guiding principle of her entire life. It began when five-year-old Suletta was afraid of getting a shot, and her mother told her, “If you run, you gain nothing. But if you move forward, you gain two things.” Throughout the series, Suletta repeats these words to steel herself whenever she faces a crisis.
As the story progresses, however, the dangerous edge of this motto comes into sharp focus. During the Plant Quetta assault, Suletta — manipulated by her mother’s machinations — follows this creed and takes irreversible action, delivering one of the most shocking moments in the series. “If you run, you gain one. If you move forward, you gain two” is a phrase of hope — and at the same time, it is her mother’s curse.
Story Arc — Season 1
Episode 1: “The Witch and the Bride” — A Stunning Debut
Suletta transfers from Mercury to the Asticassia School of Technology and immediately finds herself caught up in trouble. The school operates an official dueling system using mobile suits, and the current duel victor holds the right to claim Miorine Rembran as his “bride.”
Stepping in to protect Miorine, Suletta accepts a duel and faces Guel Jeturk’s Darilbalde in Aerial. She deploys her Bit Staves, attacks Guel from every direction, and achieves an overwhelming victory. In that moment, Suletta becomes the school’s new “Holder” — in other words, Miorine’s “groom.”
However, members of the council who witnessed Aerial’s performance begin to suspect that this machine is a GUND-ARM (Gundam). Since Gundams are banned, Suletta now faces expulsion.
Episode 3: “Guel’s Pride” — The Rematch
Unable to accept his defeat, Guel Jeturk challenges Suletta to another duel. As the heir to Jeturk Heavy Machinery, Guel is a formidable pilot who has never lost in his family’s MS. For the rematch, he fields an upgraded Darilbalde equipped with an AI support patch — but falls to the Suletta-Aerial partnership once again.
After his defeat, Suletta sincerely compliments Guel’s strength, prompting him to drop to one knee and blurt out, “Suletta Mercury. Will you marry me?” This unexpected proposal sent social media into a frenzy.
Episode 6: “A Gloomy Song” — Gundam Under Suspicion
The school conducts an investigation to determine whether Aerial is actually a Gundam. Since GUND Format machines typically cause Data Storm-related physical harm to pilots at higher Permet Scores, Suletta is tested — but shows no symptoms whatsoever. The conclusion: Aerial is not a Gundam.
This verdict effectively concealed Aerial’s secret — the truth that another entity was absorbing the Data Storms on Suletta’s behalf.
Episode 11: “The Witches from Earth” — Permet Score 5 Awakening
When Sophie Pulone and Norea Du Noc attack with their Gundam Lfrith Ur and Gundam Lfrith Thorn, Aerial is pushed to its limits. In the moment Suletta steels her resolve, the Permet Score surges to 5. The Shell Units shift from red to blue, and the Bit Staves chase down enemy machines with otherworldly precision.
Episode 12 (Season 1 Finale): “To Move Forward, Not to Run Away” — A Shocking Conclusion
Caught up in a terrorist attack at Plant Quetta, Suletta activates Aerial under her mother Prospera’s orders. Reaching Permet Score 6, Aerial hijacks the enemy’s unmanned Antidote weapons, turning them against the attackers and annihilating the opposition with overwhelming force.
The sight of Aerial, Shell Units blazing blue and its entire frame wrapped in light, was nothing short of divine. But what followed — Suletta reaching out to Miorine with a bloodstained hand and a gentle smile — sent shockwaves through the audience and made one thing absolutely clear: The Witch from Mercury was no ordinary school drama.
Aerial’s True Identity — Ericht Samaya
Spoiler Warning: The Story’s Greatest Secret
Aerial harbors a secret that lies at the very foundation of the narrative.
Within Aerial exists the consciousness of Ericht Samaya.
Ericht is the biological daughter of Prospera (Elnora Samaya) and Suletta’s “older sister.” Twenty-one years before the main story, during the Vanadis Incident, four-year-old Ericht boarded the Gundam Lfrith and formed a deep link with the machine’s GUND Format. In the process, Ericht’s consciousness was absorbed into the mobile suit’s systems, leaving her body behind — she literally became the machine itself.
The Lfrith was later rebuilt into Aerial, and Ericht’s consciousness remains within it. The reason Suletta suffers no Data Storm damage is that Ericht was absorbing the Data Storms in her place. When Suletta felt that “Aerial is family,” it was because the consciousness of her family was literally inside the mobile suit.
Even more staggering is the fact that Suletta herself is a clone (Repli-Child) created from Ericht’s genetic material. Prospera had created Suletta and other Repli-Children as potential “vessels” through which she hoped to restore Ericht’s consciousness.
This premise earned widespread acclaim for taking the universal Gundam theme of “the bond between pilot and mobile suit” and exploring it in a way the franchise had never done before.
XVX-016RN Gundam Aerial Rebuild — The Season 2 Configuration
Core Specifications
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| Model Number | XVX-016RN |
| Name | Gundam Aerial Rebuild |
| Head Height | 18.2m |
| Weight | 53.2t |
| Armor Material | Permet Paint Armor (PPA) |
| Manufacturer | Shin Sei Development Corporation |
| Pilot | Suletta Mercury |
| Appearance | Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury Season 2 (2023) |
Background of the Rebuild
After the Plant Quetta incident at the end of Season 1 left Aerial heavily damaged, Prospera overhauled and upgraded it into the Aerial Rebuild (XVX-016RN). The “RN” designation is said to stand for “Rebuild/Renewal.”
Differences from the Original
The Rebuild features an almost entirely new exterior, with very few parts carried over from the original. The main changes are as follows.
Visual Changes
– Revised color scheme. The upper armor shifts from a pale blue to a deeper, richer blue
– A dedicated thruster unit added to the backpack enables independent space travel (making the Mirasoul Flight Unit unnecessary)
– An overall sharper silhouette
Upgraded Armaments
– The beam rifle is replaced with an enhanced model, featuring an interchangeable barrel for adjustable output
– A new Gun Bit Rifle configuration allows all Bit Staves to combine with the beam rifle, functioning as an ultra-high-output beam cannon
– The Escutcheon still consists of 11 bits, but each individual bit has increased output
Performance
– Weight increases from 43.9t to 53.2t (approximately +9.3t), reflecting the added armor and thruster units
– Head height increases slightly from 18.0m to 18.2m
– Standalone space combat capability is vastly improved
Season 2 Highlights
The Aerial Rebuild plays a pivotal role in Season 2’s duel sequences. Most memorably, it rematches Guel’s Darilbalde. During the fight, Aerial (Ericht) abruptly stops moving, and Guel seizes the opening to snap off its antenna. This marks Suletta’s first-ever defeat.
This loss is not a matter of raw power. It signals that Ericht’s consciousness has begun to question her relationship with Suletta — a narratively crucial moment. Aerial “stopped moving” because the person inside it refused to move.
The Final Battle at Quiet Zero
In the story’s climax, the Aerial Rebuild is co-opted as the core of Prospera’s final plan, “Quiet Zero.” Connected to the massive Data Storm generating system, Aerial merges with Ericht’s consciousness and deploys a space-scale Permet network.
Ultimately, Suletta switches to a new machine — Gundam Calibarn — and charges into Quiet Zero for one last confrontation with Ericht, who has become one with Aerial.
Design Secrets — JNTHED’s “New-Era Gundam”
Designer: JNTHED
The mechanical design of Gundam Aerial was handled by illustrator and mecha designer JNTHED. The Witch from Mercury employed an unusual structure where different designers were assigned to each corporation (and, by extension, each school house). JNTHED was responsible for the protagonist’s MS lineup.
| Faction | Designer |
|---|---|
| Protagonist side (Aerial line) | JNTHED |
| Jeturk-manufactured MS | Ippei Gyoubu |
| Peil-manufactured MS | Wataru Inata |
| Grassley-manufactured MS | Kanetake Ebikawa |
| Other factions | Takayuki Yanase, Kenji Teraoka |
Design Philosophy
JNTHED placed special emphasis on the following elements when designing Aerial.
Weapon Transfer Rail System
A rail mechanism that moves weapons from the back to beneath the arms. This enables a smooth draw of the beam rifle from its rear mount. Previous Gundams typically had pilots “grab the weapon from a hip rack by hand” or “start with it already in hand,” but Aerial incorporates a mechanical handoff mechanism.
360-Degree Upper Body Rotation
The concept of “the upper body rotating 360 degrees around the waist, like a tank turret” represents a pursuit of tactical rationality while still honoring the humanoid form of a mobile suit.
Muscular Proportions
In early promotional interviews, JNTHED described Aerial’s physique as “muscular.” Bucking the recent trend toward slim, stylish Gundams, JNTHED deliberately chose a powerful silhouette. This reflects Aerial’s dual identity as both “the fighting spirit of a girl” and “a reliable member of the family.”
Shell Unit Visual Design
The visual transformation of the Shell Units from red to blue represents the rising Permet Score. This “glowing armor” design had a major influence on Gunpla product design as well, with clear parts recreating the Shell Units becoming the kits’ biggest selling point.
Cultural Impact — What “The Witch from Mercury” Changed
Expanding Gundam’s Audience
The most significant achievement of The Witch from Mercury was bringing the largest influx of new fans in Gundam history into the franchise. A female protagonist, a school setting, dueling as an easy-to-follow battle format, and social media-friendly character dynamics (especially the Suletta-Miorine relationship) attracted viewers who had never touched Gundam before — particularly women and the social media generation.
After each weekly broadcast, Twitter (X) trending lists were dominated by terms related to the show: “Witch from Mercury,” “Aerial,” “Suletta,” and “Miorine” became regulars.
Sales Impact
In Bandai Namco Holdings’ FY2023 (ending March 2023) earnings, total Gundam-related sales hit an all-time high. Gundam-related revenue for the period reached 72.6 billion yen (first half), a 16.3% year-over-year increase. The company’s report cited the hit success of The Witch from Mercury as a driver of popularity across the group’s products and services.
Aerial’s Gunpla kits went into persistent shortages immediately after launch, and the “can’t buy Gunpla” phenomenon made mainstream news coverage.
“Gundam as Family” — A New Theme
In previous Gundam series, mobile suits were ultimately weapons. While there were depictions of pilots growing attached to their machines, there had been almost no cases of a machine possessing its own will (with rare exceptions like the Unicorn Gundam’s La+ System).
By giving Aerial the premise of “a mobile suit that holds a family member’s consciousness,” the show placed the relationship between pilot and MS at the very heart of the narrative. Suletta’s habit of talking to Aerial and saying “Let’s do our best together” carried a warmth that was absent from previous Gundam series, and this “bond with an MS” resonated especially strongly with new fans.
The Season 1 Finale Shockwave
The final scene of Season 1 (Episode 12) generated an explosive reaction on social media the moment it aired. The contrast between Aerial’s overwhelming power at Permet Score 6 and Suletta’s subsequent actions prompted an avalanche of “I can’t believe Gundam went this far” reactions. The episode trended for over a week, spawning an enormous volume of analysis videos and fan works.
The Spread of “If You Run, You Gain One”
Suletta’s motto became widely known far beyond the anime fandom. The phrase was embraced as a positive, motivational message — but as the story progressed and its nature as a “curse” came into view, this duality sparked extensive analysis and debate.
Among English-speaking fans, “If you run, you gain one. If you move forward, you gain two” spread widely and has earned a place in the rankings of great Gundam quotes.
MS Dueling as a New Format
The dueling system that served as the stage for Aerial’s battles is an essential part of the show’s appeal. Traditional Gundam series are set against the backdrop of war, but The Witch from Mercury framed MS combat as rules-based matches within a school, lending it a sports-like tension and accessibility that dramatically lowered the barrier for new viewers. Every duel featuring Aerial showcased different tactics, with the Bit Staves’ diverse combat patterns providing both strategic depth and visual spectacle.
