What Is Infinite Justice? — The Pinnacle of Close Combat, Embodying Atonement and Responsibility
Its white and crimson armor gleaming in the light, the Fatum-01 transforming to envelop the machine — the moment Infinite Justice Gundam appears on the battlefield, it asserts an overwhelming dominance in every close-quarters engagement.
First appearing in Phase 40, “A World Freed,” the episode that set the stage for the final arc of Mobile Suit Gundam SEED DESTINY (which began airing in 2004), this mobile suit arrived alongside the moment Athrun Zala shed his disguise as “Alex Dino” of the Orb military and declared his return to battle as himself.
“This is my answer.”
— Athrun Zala, upon receiving Infinite Justice
In the 2024 theatrical film Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM, the machine was reborn as the Infinite Justice Gundam Type II, once again taking the screen as a unit that embodies Athrun’s pride as a warrior.
Inheriting the design philosophy of the predecessor Justice Gundam — a close-combat companion machine — and refining it to its absolute limit, Infinite Justice stands as the “pinnacle of close-quarters combat” to Strike Freedom’s role as the “master of long-range annihilation.”
This article provides a comprehensive breakdown of Infinite Justice, from its origins to its evolution.

Specifications Breakdown
Like Strike Freedom (ZGMF-X20A), Infinite Justice is a next-generation Gundam-type mobile suit developed in secret by Terminal’s factory. Its power source is the same Hyper-Deuterion Engine — a revolutionary hybrid drive combining a nuclear engine with a Deuterion beam power transmission system. The virtually unlimited energy this engine provides enables the simultaneous operation of Variable Phase Shift Armor and various beam weapons.
The key difference from Strike Freedom lies in their respective design philosophies. While Strike Freedom is built around “overwhelming firepower from long range,” Infinite Justice is specialized for “close-quarters combat at extreme mobility.”
Beyond its numerous close-combat weapons mounted throughout the frame, the machine features a transformation capability through its variable backpack and support unit, the Fatum-01. This transformation grants Infinite Justice independent atmospheric flight, allowing it to operate with high maneuverability across space, atmosphere, and ground-based theaters alike.
In terms of mass, Infinite Justice at 79.35 t is nearly identical to Strike Freedom’s 80.09 t, but given the close-combat focus, priority in the spec budget was placed on articulation range and burst maneuverability throughout the frame.
Armament — A Weapons System Built for Full-Body Close Combat
Infinite Justice’s armament is a one-of-a-kind system that embodies the philosophy of “close combat using every part of the body.” Unlike other Gundams, virtually every component — not just beam sabers, but the legs, shield, and Fatum-01 — serves as a means of attack.
MMI-GAU26 17mm CIWS
| Specification | Details |
|---|---|
| Mounting Location | Head × 2 guns |
| Caliber | 17mm |
| Purpose | Missile interception, close-range suppression fire |
Twin close-in weapon system guns housed in the head. With a smaller caliber than Strike Freedom’s 31mm CIWS, the deprioritization of gun armament reflects the mobile suit’s close-combat concept. Primary uses are intercepting incoming missiles and laying down suppressive fire before transitioning to melee range.
MA-M01G Lacerta Beam Saber
| Specification | Details |
|---|---|
| Quantity | 2 |
| Mounting Location | Rear waist |
| Special Modes | Dual-wield, simultaneous use with beam shield |
Infinite Justice’s primary close-combat weapon. Typically dual-wielded in both hands. An upgraded version of the MA-M01 Lacerta carried by the predecessor Justice, featuring improved output and reliability.
Athrun is known for high-speed saber exchanges using both blades, and during SEED activation his continuous assault operates at speeds that exceed normal human perception. The combined technique of wielding a saber in the right hand while simultaneously using the left arm’s beam shield — attack and defense unified — is widely recognized as Athrun’s signature style.
MX2351 Solidus Fulgor Beam Shield Generator
| Specification | Details |
|---|---|
| Mounting Location | Left forearm / back of shield |
| Special Function | Beam blade projection (usable offensively) |
A beam shield generator mounted on the left forearm and the back of the shield. It can project the beam field in a blade configuration, making it equally viable as a close-range weapon.
This concept of “repurposing a defensive weapon for offense” is central to Infinite Justice’s design philosophy. Athrun frequently deploys it to exploit openings while defending, slashing at opponents with the blade mid-guard — a technique that proved highly effective in the back half of SEED DESTINY.
RQM60F Flash Edge 2 Beam Boomerang
| Specification | Details |
|---|---|
| Mounting Location | Both shoulders × 1 each (2 total) |
| Usage | Thrown homing attack, hand-held melee use |
Beam boomerangs mounted on both shoulders. An enhanced version of the Justice predecessor’s “Flash Edge,” offering improved cutting power and tracking performance.
After being thrown, they home in on targets autonomously for use as ranged weapons — but they can just as easily be gripped and used as beam blades in melee, giving them a dual nature. Further tactical variety comes from crossing two simultaneous throws or combining them with beam saber attacks in continuous strings.
Athrun’s use of the Flash Edge 2 has been shown to combine approach and feinting maneuvers simultaneously. In the series, the tactic of drawing an enemy’s attention to the boomerang while the main body circles into a blind spot was particularly memorable.
MA-M02G Super Lacerta Beam Saber (Fatum-01 Mounted)
| Specification | Details |
|---|---|
| Mounting Location | Fatum-01 × 1 |
| Special Purpose | Independent close-range attack when Fatum-01 is detached |
A beam saber mounted directly on the Fatum-01 unit. Designed to function even when Fatum-01 is separated and operating independently, enabling the unit to serve as a standalone attack platform.
EQFU-3X Super DRAGOON Mobile Weapon Fins
| Specification | Details |
|---|---|
| Mounting Location | Legs (× 3 per leg, 6 total) |
| Armament | Beam blade / beam cannon |
| Control Method | Quantum communication DRAGOON system |
The Super DRAGOON “Mobile Weapon Fins” are Infinite Justice’s most distinctive feature. Whereas Strike Freedom mounts its DRAGOONs on the back wings, Infinite Justice houses six mobile weapon fins in its legs — three per leg.
This leg placement is a direct expression of the close-combat design philosophy. The fins can deploy mid-kick to expand melee attack range, or fire in multiple directions during hand-to-hand fighting when both arms are otherwise occupied — enabling a unique combat style that fuses melee and remote attacks.
While Athrun used the mobile weapon fins less frequently than Strike Freedom’s Super DRAGOONs, they saw effective use in the late-series space battles, including a coordination sequence with Yzak Joule’s Dreadnought.
Fatum-01 — Mobile Support Unit and Flight Form
| Specification | Details |
|---|---|
| Configuration | Variable backpack and support unit |
| Atmospheric Flight | Capable (independent flight) |
| Separation Function | Can operate as an independent unmanned attack unit |
| Armament | Beam saber × 1, multiple beam cannons |
| Name Origin | Arabic for “thigh” |
The most inventive element of Infinite Justice’s design is the Fatum-01. An evolution of the Justice predecessor’s “Fatum-00,” this variable backpack grants Infinite Justice a range of capabilities.
Flight Form (Fatum Ride Mode):
Infinite Justice folds into the Fatum-01 in a configuration resembling a space fighter, enabling high-speed cruising. In this state the machine is capable of free atmospheric flight. This transformation mode is one of the primary reasons Infinite Justice can operate on any battlefield in the Earth Sphere.
Separation Attack (Fatum Attack):
Fatum-01 can be detached from the main body and operated as an unmanned, independent attack unit. Equipped with its own beam saber and beam cannons, it can combine its attacks with the main body to execute encirclement assaults.
The battle technique of separating Fatum-01 while continuing to fight in melee with the main body — used by Athrun in the back half of SEED DESTINY — left a vivid impression on viewers as an iconic demonstration of his extraordinary piloting skill.
Pilot — Athrun Zala, Warrior of Atonement and Responsibility
Who Is Athrun Zala?
| Specification | Details |
|---|---|
| Full Name | Athrun Zala |
| Age | 19 (during SEED DESTINY) |
| Affiliation History | ZAFT → Orb (alias “Alex Dino”) → Terminal |
| Characteristics | Elite Coordinator, top ZAFT pilot |
| Voice Actor | Akira Ishida |
| Mobile Suit History | Aegis Gundam → Justice Gundam → Windam (as Alex Dino) → Saviour Gundam → Infinite Justice Gundam → Infinite Justice Gundam Type II |
Athrun Zala is an elite Coordinator and the son of PLANT Supreme Council Chairman Patrick Zala. In the predecessor series Gundam SEED, he fought against his childhood friend Kira Yamato as an enemy before ultimately joining forces to share the same goal: ending the war.
At the start of SEED DESTINY, Athrun is living under the alias “Alex Dino” embedded in the Orb military — having withdrawn from the public stage following the First Bloody Valentine War. However, as war reignites and he watches the movements of his former allies in ZAFT, he resolves to return to battle.
Athrun’s position in SEED DESTINY is extraordinarily complex. Moving between ZAFT, Orb, and Terminal, he continuously questions what he is fighting for — and that inner struggle is one of the most important threads running through the entire series.
Athrun’s Piloting Ability — A Genius of Close Combat
Athrun is one of ZAFT’s top pilots alongside Kira, but his style is in sharp contrast. Where Kira’s strength is “perfect precision shooting,” Athrun’s is “ultra-high-speed close-quarters combat.”
The speed and variety of his continuous assaults — instantly combining dual beam saber strikes, throwing and gripping the Flash Edge 2, and deploying the beam shield in both attack and defense — demonstrate a melee sense that ranks among the finest in the entire SEED franchise.
During SEED (Superior Evolutionary Element Destined-factor) activation in particular, Athrun’s perception, reaction, and decision-making speeds increase dramatically, entering a state where judgments and maneuvers impossible under normal conditions become achievable in rapid succession. Infinite Justice’s design is optimized to draw out Athrun’s close-combat-focused abilities to their maximum potential — the compatibility between pilot and machine is essentially perfect.
Athrun’s Struggle in SEED DESTINY
Athrun’s story in SEED DESTINY is not a straightforward heroic journey. Throughout the series he repeatedly re-examines his own choices, wrestling with conflicts with allies, actions that appear as betrayals, and profound questions about his own identity and purpose.
His relationship with Shinn Asuka is particularly symbolic. Athrun recognized Shinn’s talent as a pilot while sensing the danger in the direction Shinn was heading — and despite serving as a mentor figure, he ultimately found himself in direct combat against Shinn’s Destiny Gundam.
The Athrun who piloted Infinite Justice through those struggles, fighting to the very end on the conviction of his own rightness, remains in the minds of many fans as the most complex and deeply drawn character in SEED DESTINY.
Combat Record — The Complete Account of SEED DESTINY’s Second Half
Phase-40 “A World Freed” — A Dramatic Return
When Athrun found Orb declaring its support for the Earth Alliance and could no longer accept what he saw, he shed the mask of “Alex Dino” and made for Terminal. There, Lacus was waiting — and she handed him the newly completed Infinite Justice.
“This is my answer.”
With those words, Athrun declared his return to the fight. This scene — Athrun receiving Infinite Justice — is the symbolic “second departure point” for the character in SEED DESTINY.
In this episode, his first combat sortie in the machine, Athrun intervened in the battle against Orb. Infinite Justice’s capabilities were put on full display as he overwhelmed multiple Windams in consecutive close-quarters engagements.
The Clash with Saviour — Confronting a Former Comrade
One of SEED DESTINY’s most significant dramatic moments is the breakdown of the mentor-student relationship between Athrun and Shinn Asuka. Athrun also found himself going up against former comrades from his time in ZAFT.
He watched the movements of Shinn acting alongside Rey Za Burrel with complicated feelings. When the inevitable confrontation arrived at the climax of the series, the scene in which Athrun pushed Infinite Justice’s close-combat capabilities to their absolute limit became one of the most crucial moments of SEED DESTINY’s endgame.
The Duel Against Destiny Gundam
One of SEED DESTINY’s defining showdowns is the collision between Athrun’s Infinite Justice and Shinn Asuka’s Destiny Gundam.
The saber exchange between master and student was a battle where both men’s anguish and resolve intersected. Against Destiny Gundam’s diverse arsenal — the “Palm Fin Funnels,” Arrowheads, and anti-beam shield — Athrun drove Infinite Justice straight in with its full close-combat capability.
Athrun ultimately rendered Shinn combat-incapable, but Shinn himself survived. The will to “defeat without killing” is the shared conviction of Kira and Athrun — a living demonstration that both men are fighting not to destroy their enemies, but to end the war.
The LOGOS Headquarters Assault
In the joint Terminal and Orb offensive against LOGOS’s base, Infinite Justice played a central role. Engaging the Alliance’s new model units, Athrun deployed Fatum-01 for high-mobility combat, neutralizing multiple enemy machines in sequence while pushing forward in parallel with Kira’s Strike Freedom to shift the tide of battle.
The most memorable moment in this engagement was Infinite Justice’s ambush from flight form (Fatum Ride Mode) — approaching at high speed, then instantly dropping out of flight form to transition into melee. It was a tactic only this particular mobile suit could execute, and it was fully showcased here.
The Final Battle — Confronting Chairman Durandal’s Requiem
In the final stretch of the story, Chairman Durandal fires the Requiem — a colony laser cannon — to execute the Destiny Plan. Athrun’s Infinite Justice joined the fleet engagement and ground assault to seize the Requiem base, pressing into the heart of the final battle.
While Strike Freedom took on Destiny and Legend, Infinite Justice held a separate front. Deploying both the mobile weapon fins and the Fatum-01 in full combined combat, Athrun contributed to the success of the final operation.
Across all 50 episodes of SEED DESTINY, Infinite Justice participated in every major second-half engagement, enduring as the machine that carried both Athrun’s anguish and his resolve — and leaving its mark on the series in a way that endures.
Variations and Derivatives — The Justice Lineage
Justice Gundam (ZGMF-X09A) — The Origin
| Specification | Details |
|---|---|
| Model Number | ZGMF-X09A |
| Overall Height | 18.16 m |
| Weight | 75.4 t |
| Power Source | Nuclear engine (with Neutron Jammer Canceller) |
| Appearance | Mobile Suit Gundam SEED (2002–2003) |
The direct predecessor to Infinite Justice. The machine Athrun piloted in the original Gundam SEED, standing alongside Freedom Gundam as its “sister unit.”
Justice’s design philosophy — “a close-combat specialist built around coordination with Freedom,” with a variable backpack (Fatum-00) for flight and separation attacks — was carried forward intact into Infinite Justice and enhanced in every respect.
At the conclusion of the First Bloody Valentine War, Athrun crashed Justice into the GENESIS weapon, destroying the machine. This near self-sacrificial act, and the meaning of the word “Infinite” in the successor’s name, has been the subject of extensive analysis among fans.
Infinite Justice Gundam Type II (ZGMF-X191M2) — SEED FREEDOM
| Specification | Details |
|---|---|
| Model Number | ZGMF-X191M2 |
| Overall Height | 18.56 m |
| Weight | 81.37 t |
| Appearance | Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM (2024) |
| First Appearance | Theatrical release (January 2024) |
The comprehensively rebuilt version that appears in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM. After being recovered and placed in storage following the Second Bloody Valentine War, the original Infinite Justice was refit and upgraded by Terminal (or Orb’s technical division) specifically for Athrun’s use.
While the visual design retains the base unit’s lineage, numerous details have been updated, with the frame and weapon systems brought up to current standards. The successor unit to Fatum-01 has received expanded capabilities in particular, with further improvements to atmospheric maneuverability.
In SEED FREEDOM, Athrun enters the story initially in a different capacity, but eventually climbs into the Infinite Justice Type II and joins his old comrades against a new threat. The close-combat specialization that defines the base design remains — and the Type II is portrayed as a machine with that combat capability refined to an even sharper edge.

Memorable Scenes and Quotes
“This Is My Answer” — Phase-40
One of SEED DESTINY’s most pivotal turning points. Athrun, having shed the mask of the alias “Alex Dino,” receives Infinite Justice from Lacus.
Everything that had wavered in Athrun up to this moment solidifies in those four words. That Athrun — who in the previous series had voluntarily crashed Justice into GENESIS — now declares his return to battle with a new machine makes this scene a crystallized representation of his growth and resolve as a character.
The Clash with Destiny — A Master and Student’s Duel
The duel between Infinite Justice and Destiny Gundam: a confrontation between a former mentor and his student. The themes SEED DESTINY explored — generational conflict, the collision of beliefs — are concentrated into this single fight.
Athrun defeats Shinn, but never directs his blade at the cockpit. This is the living embodiment of the conviction he shares with Kira: “fight to end the war, but take no lives.” The outcome in which Shinn survives his defeat and accepts it carries a weight far beyond mere victory and loss.
“I understand your feelings. But that is not the right way to use that power.”
— The stance Athrun demonstrated to Shinn through their battle
“I Believed Lacus’s Words” — Athrun’s Decisive Moment
Throughout the story, Athrun acts while continually asking himself what is truly right. His trust in Lacus and his bond with Kira ultimately guide him to stand against Durandal’s Destiny Plan.
The reason Infinite Justice kept fighting to the last is shown not in Athrun’s words, but in the arc of his actions. Moving between multiple factions, wavering repeatedly, yet finally fighting for “his own justice” — that is the essence of Athrun as a character, and the meaning behind the name Infinite Justice.
Fatum-01 Separation Attack — The Visual Climax
One of the most visually impactful moments in the series is the scene in which Infinite Justice deploys Fatum-01 separately to execute a pincer attack. While the main body presses a close-quarters assault from the front, the detached Fatum-01 opens fire from behind. This front-and-rear encirclement tactic became one of the most talked-about action animation sequences in all of SEED DESTINY’s combat footage.
Gunpla Guide — Complete Coverage of Every Grade
Owing to its distinctive silhouette and Fatum-01’s transformation function, Infinite Justice has generated a series of kits where the designers at each grade have devised clever engineering solutions.

Design Characteristics — A Fusion of Armored Samurai and Angel
Kunio Okawara’s Design Concept
Like Strike Freedom, Infinite Justice was designed by Kunio Okawara.
Working from the concept of evolving the predecessor Justice Gundam as a “close-combat companion unit,” Okawara gave Strike Freedom an “angelic” silhouette — white and blue with golden wings — while Infinite Justice received a combination of white and red armor with multiple articulated units that conveys a heavier, more grounded presence reminiscent of an armored samurai warrior.
The flight form, in which Fatum-01 transforms to wrap around the main body as if the machine is donning armor, has been affectionately dubbed the “armored form” by fans — a nod to exactly that visual impression.
Proportions Designed for Melee Combat
Infinite Justice’s frame is designed so that close-combat movements are never impeded. The shoulder-mounted Flash Edge 2 is positioned so as not to interfere with melee motion, and the leg-mounted mobile weapon fins are housed in a compact form that is nearly invisible when stowed.
At the same time, the Fatum-01 makes a strong visual statement — and it is precisely this that has cemented the association “Infinite Justice equals Fatum-01” in the minds of fans.
The Meaning of Red
The red of Infinite Justice functions as a color of “passion, fighting spirit, and atonement” in direct contrast to Strike Freedom’s white, blue, and gold. As a representation of Athrun Zala’s position — a man who could at any moment find himself on either side of the conflict — and his internal struggle of anguish and resolve, the pairing of white and red is believed to have been a deliberate choice from the earliest stages of the design process.
Conclusion — What Infinite Justice Embodies
Infinite Justice Gundam is far more than “Strike Freedom’s companion machine.”
A weapons system pushed to the extreme of close-combat specialization; a unique set of capabilities through Fatum-01’s transformation and separation; a design philosophy that converts every part of the frame into an offensive instrument — all of these perfectly embody the fighting style and convictions of its pilot, Athrun Zala.
Many interpretations exist for the word “Infinite.” One reading: Athrun, having lost Justice in the previous war, takes up a new machine to confront the “infinitely recurring question of what justice truly is.” Another: a combat unit that has pursued the apex of close-quarters fighting possesses “combat capability with no ceiling.” Either way, there is no doubt that this name reflects the essential nature of Athrun as a person — the posture of continuing to fight for one’s own justice while still wrestling with doubt.
The appearance of the Type II in the 2024 theatrical film SEED FREEDOM makes clear that Infinite Justice’s story has not ended. As long as Kira and Athrun walk the same path, the “ultimate partnership” of Strike Freedom and Infinite Justice will continue to stand as guardians of the Cosmic Era world.
